Europe condemns Iran’s crackdown, summons envoys over rights violations
In the United Kingdom, the Iranian envoy was called in to “answer for the horrific reports” of killings and attacks on demonstrators, according to the Foreign Secretary.
France also summoned the Iranian ambassador, denouncing “in the strongest terms the state violence inflicted indiscriminately on peaceful demonstrators,” while Germany followed suit, with the chancellor warning that the Iranian regime may be entering its “final days and weeks.”
Italy joined the condemnation, summoning an Iranian official over what the foreign minister described as the “extremely high price” in blood being paid by protesters, calling the situation “absolutely unacceptable.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen characterized the rising death toll as “horrifying,” stating: "I unequivocally condemn the excessive use of force and continued restriction of freedom." She added that, working with the EU’s foreign policy chief, additional sanctions targeting those responsible for the crackdown would be proposed promptly.
Spain also summoned the Iranian ambassador to formally express its strong condemnation of Tehran’s violent actions. The Spanish foreign minister said, “We want to express our strong repudiation and condemnation of what has been happening for days in Iran. We are watching this closely and with great concern.”
